  • A Book That Speaks to Us

    Funded Mar 1, 2025

Thank you so much! Just when I thought this project would go unfunded, you, generous, kind donors came through! I am truly grateful for you all!

I can not wait to start reading this book with my class. I know they will love it. We finished Kate DiCamilloś Tiger Rising and we are now reading Sharon Draper´s Stella By Starlight. Each book has given my students insight into a different world. Now with My Family Divided, the world they will enter will reflect their own. How empowering is that!

I know this book will generate a lot of discussion, some difficult ones. But that is what books are supposed to do. So I am thrilled and excited to embark on this reading journey with my students.

    Again thank you, dear donors.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hum

  • Please Help My Newcomers to Read!

    Funded Oct 31, 2024

Thank you for your generous donations. The books and games arrived and my newcomer students are happily playing the games and learning to read. it helped so much that they each got a copy of the book. They are able to bring it home to practice with their families.

It is difficult for me to find time let alone resources that will engage my NEWCOMERS in meaningful ways. With the CVC books, my students are able to read them independently and to each other which makes it more fun for them and less stressful for me. The games help build community. I recently received another newcomer student from Mexico. .The games are a fun and easy way to make her feel more at home and for her to have the opportunity to make some friends.

I can see their confidence growing as they are able to read more of the books. It is wonderful to see how proud they feel when they have read out loud a book that they know by heart. They now look forward to going to the kidney table to read!”

  • Let the Games Begin!

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you for your generous donations. My class started playing the board game Allowance right away! They were excited to have money in their hands even though the money was fake.

Students are practicing counting money and making change, both valuable life skills. They are having fun and practicing good sportsmanship as well. Even my newcomer students who speak very little English or none at all are playing. One student, in particular, always manages to win!

I have allotted time on Fridays towards the end of the day to play our games. It is a wonderful way to end the week!”

  • Let It Be Heard!

    Funded Jan 17, 2023

Thank you for the headphones! My students use the headphones throughout the day in all subjects. The headphones make it easy for me to assign work that my students can do independently.

During reading instruction, they spend 30 minutes working on their reading comprehension while I pull groups for intervention.

After my explicit math lesson, students go on their computers with headphones to practice what I taught in the math lesson.

Finally, students conduct research on the computer in cooperative groups or individually. With the headphones, they are able to access YouTube videos as additional resources.”

  • Let's Talk about Books!

    Funded Jan 17, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation! We received our voice recorders and used them to record our stories.

We wrote stories about ourselves and we chose our favorite one to record. Each student had alone time to record. I uploaded the audios into our Google Classroom for all to enjoy. I am going to share the audios with our parents as well.

It was wonderful to see students value their stories as well as the stories of their classmates. We also used them to record our book discussions. But the culminating experience was telling and listening to each other's stories.”

  • I Made It Myself

    Funded Feb 7, 2022

    Dear donors,

Thank you for your contributions. My students loved playing, experimenting and creating with the clay. We are studying habitats currently so we decided to use the clay to create our own imaginary habitats. The students wanted animals in their habitats, some bought plastic ones from home.

We studied two habitats prior to the activity, tide pools and coral reefs. Some students used this information to create their own and some used their imaginations. It was wonderful to see how engaged and motivated my students were.

We are so grateful for your generosity. Thank you again!”

  • Stella by Starlight

    Funded Feb 6, 2022

My students are organized into reading groups. There are mixed levels of readers so that more proficient readers can help the struggling readers. Before we get into our groups, I ask students some focus questions to think about as they read. These questions are posted on the board for all to see. These questions guide students to think more deeply about the text. For those students who are English Language Learners, I translate questions into Spanish.

My students really enjoyed reading ¨Stella By Starlight¨. Many could not believe that the Ku Klux Klan were real and a part of our history. They were angry at the racism that Stella had to endure. We engaged in a discussion on their own experiences with racism as many of my students are Spanish speaking.

Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to engage and learn from this important book.”

  • Time's Up!

    Funded Feb 9, 2022

Thank you for our timers! We just started using them during our Reading Block. My Reading Block consists of a read aloud, highlighting evidence, and fluency practice. Students practice their fluency with a reading partner.

So far so good! When I took the timers out, my students got so excited. They were motivated to read. I modeled how to use it and they were off. Everyone was engaged. What really made me happy was watching my English Language Learners reading. The timers gave everyone a chance to just read and have fun.

Next steps will be to keep a fluency journal where students can chart their own progress. I would love also to create partnerships between my English Language Learners and my more proficient readers.”

  • Checkers, Anyone?

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

My students could not wait to get their hands on the new checkers set. They eagerly watched as I unwrapped the boxes. They are thrilled!

Every Friday I reserve time at the end of the day for checkers. This is great incentive for them to complete their work. I have noticed that my girls are getting more competitive. In the past, they were more reserved, less willing to take chances. Now I see them more confident and expressive when they are playing.

I am thinking of hosting a checkers tournament as soon as they have punched in enough practice games!

Thank you again for your generous donations. You have made a difference in my class!”

  • Help Build My Library

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations of books to add to my library!

My students are already signing up to take them out. They spied them on my table as I was unpacking them and they were so eager to get their hands on them. There was a mad rush! I even have a waiting list. And that has NEVER happened before.

A few of my struggling readers approached me and asked if they could borrow one of these books. That is amazing! I am so happy that they are excited about reading. The right book makes all the difference!

These books will be read in class during our Silent Reading time and at home. I have my students read every night for 20 minutes to improve their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. With these new books, I know I will not have to remind them to read!”
