I have taught first grade for almost a decade and am moving to sixth grade now. My sixth graders will mostly be Long Term English Learners. By providing popular, high-interest picture books in my library, I hope to enrich their literacy experiences and introduce worthwhile topics in ways in which they will be put at ease. With the use of picture books, I hope to help them fall in love or back in love with reading. I hope to tackle topics that are meaningful and important to them. I hope to remind them that being read to is still something they can enjoy and look forward to. It is something that tends to get lost as students transition through upper elementary grades, then middle and high school. Since most of my students are long term English Learners, reading aloud at this level of English Acquisition, helps to provide great modeling opportunities of proper intonation and inflection and it also gives them access to vocabulary that they don't encounter in their homes. Picture books are non-threatening to struggling readers and they are also inviting. They provide great visual cues as well as context and helps students become engaged during otherwise difficult topics. I look forward to reading aloud to my sixth graders and hope that you can contribute to this experience.
