  • Finalizing Our Confidence Towards Our End of Year Concert!

    Funded Feb 15, 2020

Our concert at Cal State Northridge was cancelled due to COVID. Thank you for the donations that paid for 2 guitars and 1 set of extra strings for repairs. My students reacted very excited when we received the packages!

Donors, my students and I were able to leave those 2 new guitars in the classroom during the week for additional practice. We were then able to take them to the auditorium for group practices. Although the concert did not happen, my students felt happy to have a complete class set of guitars and continued to play until the school closures. Thank you!”

  • Spreading Health and Wellness Through Music!

    Funded Jan 13, 2019

My fifth grade students are happy with the new guitar you helped fund! They all have expressed that music helps them feel well. Here is what some students said:

"I think music can bring wellness to our class because you can succeed in something". -Katherine

"Music is very calming that's how it can bring wellness." -Amber

"Music is very calming, peaceful, and we can learn a new skill."- Angy

"Thanks for the guitar its super cool and now we can practice a new instrument."-Luciano

"Thanks for the guitar it makes me calm." -Raymond

Right now we are working on an independent and novelty study. Some students choose the guitar and are learning to play a few songs, while I teach them basic notes and chords. One of the students is even interested in playing pomp and circumstance at graduation!

My students were very excited and surprised when they first saw the materials! Its the first time for them to have a guitar in their classroom. Its clear to see their eyes light up when they get to hold it! Its very exciting for them. Without prior knowledge students feel happy just strumming the guitar, making their very own sounds.

Next steps for my students are to do a unit on music around the world as a culminating activity for the end of the year. They are looking forward to learn more about the guitar. In addition, having one guitar trigger my students interest and wellness, made me realize we need more guitars. Your donation of one guitar, was one factor to give me confidence. I'm planning to start a guitar program for the following school year.”

  • Student Led Projects through Technology Will Strengthen Our Learning!

    Funded Sep 1, 2018

Thank you for donating to my classroom. My students have been online consistently practicing typing essays, completing reading, answering math facts and research! Having a few set of headphones has allowed me to use it with small groups or even for the students need need help concentrating.

What's exciting to my students is turning in work Ondine! Writing essays on paper is not as dry as it used to because they look forward to typing their final draft Ondine!!! We've been able to use math websites consistently to reinforce common core standards. Some are CK12 and Prodigy.

I think all my students have warmed up to technology! They seem to understand technology is not just about games, but about improving their learning.”

  • Elementary Soccer Tournament Time!

    Funded Aug 19, 2016

Our students are motivated to improve the skills and have fun with our new equipment! My students were excited to see the materials received. They helped build the goals as a class. Since the goals are sturdy, we leave them up during recess and lunch so the whole school can play with them! We have an upcoming Winter Soccer Tournament where we will use our Ribbons as awards! Our next steps are to finish the year and have other classes take part of a PE soccer lesson with us. Perhaps in the future, we can move on to other sports and learn important skills. Thank you for giving students an opportunity to be inspired to exercise!”

  • Elementary School Soccer

    Funded May 11, 2016

One of the highlights of my students' week is soccer on Fridays! This time is special for us because it lets us exercise together. My student's reaction was pure happiness! "We can score goals now Ms. Luis Juan!" some of them told me. To begin with, our class equipment monitors set up two soccer fields to play in. They have learned how to open the Pugg goals, set them up and close them once we are done. Students experience pride in taking ownership of their P.E. lessons. Next, we are also using the resources to learn basic soccer skills. We have played 1v1 matches like "Steal the Bacon", "Dribbling to attack", "Defending" and more. These goals allowed us to make soccer fields to organize scrimmage games between 4th and 5th grade students.

Some next steps for my students and our new goals are to have "Soccer Tournaments" as incentives to increase attendance and positive behavior. In addition, we would like to invite primary grade classes to join us for soccer practice and basic skills lessons on Fridays. We are lucky to have this project completed.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Luis Juan

Soccer has been a powerful motivator for my 5th grade students to improve their behavior and enjoy school. My students who struggle in various content areas through the day, or are below grade level, thrive when we do soccer drills and scrimmage games. My school is a Title 1 school that serves over 500 students. Many students in my class had a reputation for misbehaving as they were often being sent out of the room, getting in trouble or not producing work through the years. This school year, their attitude towards learning has greatly improved. They trust that my love for soccer recognizes their playing abilities and has helped me build rapport as their teacher. They trust that just like soccer, what we do in the classroom is important for them to learn. Building a relationship with them creates a positive climate to have trust and commitment from all of us in the classroom.
