I teach close to 30 bright-eyed, bushy-tailed freshmen. These young scholars are quite special, having self-elected to enroll in AVID. This Gear-Up sponsored program focuses on preparing "at-risk" students for college readiness and success in a global society with instruction in study and organizational skills. Data shows that students enrolled in AVID not only enroll in college at higher rates but score significant higher gains throughout high school. 75% of Edison's student population is Latino while the remaining 25% is African American. According to district data,100% of students identify as being economically disadvantaged. We also boast of high percentage of English language learners. Edison experiences many of the hardships of under-resourced urban schools including violence, few teachers and support staff, crowded classrooms, few supplies, few mental health resources, and a high dropout rate
