In the morning my students are energized and eager to begin the day, their bodies can hardly be controlled. In the afternoons, the sugar rush has passed, and students seem to melt before my eyes in their chairs. When I think of myself as a student, or even as a reader, I think of what I prefer the environment to be. Comfortable, inviting, and realistic for what I plan to do. I, myself, can hardly imagine sitting still in a chair for hours on end, let alone a seven or eight year old. I began to research my options and came upon the concept of Flexible Seating, and wobble chairs.
Our children in 2017 are much different than those in the late 1900s, so shouldn't the classroom also reflect that? After experimenting with a variety of materials in our classroom, I believe Kore wobble chairs will benefit students' ability to focus on their work while also satisfying their need to move. The chair has a rounded bottom that allows quiet wobbling; keeping students seated and focused on their work. The movement helps with their balance and engages their core muscles, which makes seat work much less sedentary.
Today's students will hold jobs that we haven't even heard of yet, and that inspires me as a teacher and drives me to help broaden their horizons and achieve amazing things. Flexible seating arrangements give students the chance to take charge of their education and help meet their individual needs. While this is only the first step, I believe it will make a tremendous difference in my classroom and the lives of my students. We are moving toward a whole new world of education as new research is evolving the 21st century classroom and I'm so excited to be a part of that!
