Exploring Identity and Change through HE NAMED ME MALALA

Funded Aug 21, 2015

Our 11th and 12th grade students had an informative and inspiring experience viewing the film, "He Named Me Malala." In the weeks before our viewing, our students read excerpts from Malala's autobiography and planned service projects around the issues surrounding her story including girls' access to education and preventing gun violence. Students also learned the meaning of Malala's name and wrote poems exploring their identity through the meaning of their own names.

The day of our trip, many students wore t-shirts that one group of students created and sold as a fundraiser to promote access of education to girls. Following the viewing of the movie students completed a series of reflection activities including taking a "strengthie" to show support for women's education and interviewing someone on the street to raise awareness about Malala and her story.

The week following our screening of the movie, a representative from the Malala Fund visited our school to speak more about the projects that the Malala Fund is engaged in. Currently, our students are organizing a clothing drive to benefit their efforts in girls' education advocacy.

Thank you again for this amazing opportunity to view and be inspired by the film, "He Named Me Malala."”

With gratitude,

Mr. Fleischauer
