Children are often very self-conscious about their appearance, including their clothes. A school uniform policy helps to keep all of the students on a "level playing field", which thus increases everyone's feeling of self esteem. Many students in our Title One school are living in single-parent, low income households. Purchasing laundry detergent and school uniforms can sometimes take on a low priority in these tough economic times. At the beginning of the school day, students are routinely sent to the school nurse seeking appropriate uniform attire. Their worried look will quickly change to a smile when they have their need met. Reliable transportation can also be a real issue, making some of the children late to school. While our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students, some of them frequently arrive too late to take advantage of the breakfast. A child cannot concentrate, much less problem solve, when their belly is growling and their head is hurting! Having some very basic food offerings on hand to give the children will make so much difference in their levels of success.
