Your donation allowed my students to understand and develop a deeper appreciation for how soil health impacts our lives. They learned that microorganisms play an important role in our environment. They also learned how to utilize the soil texture triangle, and how to determine the soil type in our garden.
The students learned different ways to propagate plants, from seed to cuttings (tī leaf), as well as using rooting hormone to clone plants. Students also learned how to start a koa tree from seed, by manipulating and cutting the outer shell so that it may sprout.

Thank you for helping me teach about soil health in general and for learning more about soil health in our garden space. It was a great experience for the students to learn about soil, the soil type in our garden space, and the pH of the soil.
The students were introduced to microorganisms through working with the compost pile and learned about mycelium and beneficial bacteria. They also learned about the importance of nitrogen-fixing plants and their role in making lactic acid, which helps with soil and plant health. Our class then learned how to make their own lactic acid using fermented rice wash water.
Because of your donations, we were able to accomplish all these things.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Hookano
