The class I am requesting calculators for is one of my 4th Grade classes consisting of 29 students. This class struggles academically in both reading and math, and, as a result, they do not have very much confidence in themselves. Over 90% of the students in our rural Kentucky school are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Although we provide an extensive after-school program to support our students, they continue to struggle in the classroom. Despite all their obstacles, when I teach math, I can see their desire to learn and to be successful. When they finally grasp an important concept, their faces light up, and they become very enthusiastic in their attempts to prove their proficiency. On the flip side, when they struggle to comprehend the content, they tend to shut down. It is an every day battle to keep these students inspired to actively participate in their education. Technology is one of the areas in which they excel, and they are more motivated to learn when it is used.
