  • Becoming Life Long Readers

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

I am so excited to add to our decodable library to ensure that my students have the chance to read books successfully on their own. It is important to maximize progress in reading by having students read books that explore the phonics principles and high frequency words that they know.

We currently have a large library of fiction stories so I am thrilled to be adding nonfiction titles to the library as well. This is just the start of expanding our decodable library to ensure that students have access to multiple genres.

Thank you for believing in our classroom and giving towards my students become life long readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marissa

  • Basic Supplies for a Successful Year!

    Funded Aug 15, 2023

Thank you for giving our classroom many of the basic supplies we need to run our class effectively each day. As we come back to school, keeping the classroom clean and sanitized is important so that we do not get sick and miss out on learning.

The item that I am most excited to use are the mini notebooks. These will be used, along with the red flair pens to help us learning high frequency words, which we call heart words, as well as reinforce the phonics principles we are learning each day. Color coding is an additional step that can help our brains solidify learning.

Once again, we thank you for your generosity and support to ensure that we have a successful school year!”

  • Role Models in Read Alouds

    Funded May 10, 2023

Thank you so much for giving my students brand new read alouds. My student's were in awe as they thumbed through the pages. They really loved learning about the determination of many of the main characters. We had wonderful conversations about the power of persisting, something many of my students must do to overcome their disabilities.

Two of our favorites were The Oldest Student and How Emily Saved the Bridge. For students that have reading challenges it was inspiring for them to learn that Mary Walker, at over 100 years old, could learn to read just like they are doing at school. Her story about all she had to do to reach her goal was inspiring. While the book about Emily Roebling touched on a serious topic, oppression of women, my students were able to see that you can push past barriers.

I can't wait to read many of the books in this project for years to come. Thank you for adding to our library!”

  • Decodable Books for Struggling Readers

    Funded Mar 23, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation for our classroom to get decodable texts. Having texts in my students hand where I know that they can read or sound out all of the words on their own is vital to reading growth. The idea of decodables is rooted in the science of reading and tied to brain research!

My students feel excited and inspired when they can read the whole book on their own. As we opened the books the room was filled with a hush. A student quickly asked if we could open up one of the boxes, so we did. Every child in the classroom was reading their book at once. It was the most beautiful symphony of noise! Thank you for helping to build my students confidence in reading through decodable texts.

Again, thank you or supporting my growing readers this year and for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

  • Learning about Diversity and Acceptance

    Funded Mar 5, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to our classroom. My students were thrilled to get new books and can't wait to read them all. We immediately read Ambitious Me, as part of Women's History Month. The students have really honed in the on the idea of being persistent and ambitious. Many of them shared ambitious goals that they have for themselves in various content areas. In addition, they have been making connections to others book we are reading during Women's History month that demonstrate ambition and persistence. I look forward to the juicy conversations we will continue to have as we read the other books from this project. I know we will have many meaningful, real life conversations, that make us dig deep and think hard!”

  • Representational Read Alouds

    Funded Dec 17, 2022

In my classroom, read alouds are used for so many purposes. To name just a few, we use them to build children's vocabulary, their ability to answer -wh questions, or retell a story. Having rich and diverse read alouds, that my students can connect, with is vital to meaningful discussions. I strongly believe that the stories we are reading should be filled with experience and characters that emulate my students experiences or those within the surrounding community.

In addition, some of the books from this project will become our mentor texts for upcoming units of studies. A model of the expectations for writing.

Thank you for giving so many beautiful books to my classroom. We will cherish them for years to come!”

  • Sensory Tools for Regulation!

    Funded Jan 31, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity. My students were delighted o have new items to add to our calm down center. The sensory items will be used daily during our afternoon mindfulness break or when students just need a moment to reset. There was instant excitement in the room as we opened the boxes and the items were already in use yesterday during mindfulness.

The weighted puppy shoulder and lap weight will be an excellent addition to the meeting rug and will go to great use to help students regulate their bodies to maintain focus to learning. I can't wait to see the impact these items will have on my students abilities to regulate and stay on task.

Thanks you for making this project come to life. Many of my students commented as we opened the boxes just how lucky we are to have so many amazing new items!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marissa

  • Save It for Good!

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thank you so much for giving us the materials we need to make visuals for individual students and our classroom. One of the ways we used the colored ink, laminating pouches, and magnets was to create our vocabulary wall. Each week we read a story for read aloud, across two days. The speech pathologist and I choose rich read alouds that expose students to knew vocabulary words. Over the course of two days, the words is explicitly taught and now becomes part of our vocabulary wall. By having it up in the room as a reference point students are more likely to internalize the word and even use it in their own writing! Thanks for giving us all of the tools we need to make a vocabulary wall this year!”

I am excited to join the PS 142 community this year teaching a group of 2nd and 3rd grade students who all have IEP's (individualized education plans) Each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational carriers before entering my classroom. As a team, my students and I, have worked tirelessly to build a STRONG learning community where everyone is a key member of the team, respects and encourages one another, and is seen for their strengths and not their challenges. Watching my students blossom into confident learners and role models in our school has been an honor. It is so wonderful to be back in-person with students this year. We greatly appreciate your helping ensuring we have the right tools to be successful learners and reduce barriers.
