I am the educator of lower income, inner city students housed in a school building of 100% African American students receiving 100% free lunch. Unfortunately, they come to me ill prepare, underexposed, and unmotivated. What this suggests is that my students are less capable of excellent achievements. It is easy to assume that they are less intelligent, but this is not the case. If we treat them as we would any other college bound students, expecting them to be able to learn to read and write well we would find that our basic writing students can actual outperform our wildest dreams. However, many of my students do not have access to any technology other than what they see in school and in the public library. Access to hand –held technology devices and laptops would bring writing to life. This has the power to change their social structure by allowing them to become empowered and engaged writers, authors and illustrators.
