Our school is a small neighborhood school in Philadelphia. Our class is diverse and includes all ranges of learners and abilities. In our classroom, there is mutual respect and support. Students feel safe in expressing concerns or asking questions. Tolerance and a sense of common identity and community are promoted. Individual strengths and differences are respected. These ideals are essential in successfully teaching middle school in the 21st century. In our classroom, social relationships, student motivation, and engagement in productive work are enhanced by having students work in cooperative groups. Students get the chance to work with different people of varying abilities and to make new friends. There are also opportunities for students to work independently. In short, we have a positive classroom environment conducive to both teaching and learning.
