  • Ready or Not, Express What You Got!

    Funded Jan 28, 2017

My class and I would like to take this time to thank you for your generous donation. Thanks to you, our classroom has a set of board games and supplies for various art activities. I can't begin to tell you the change in behavior our class has experienced since implementing an activities center. I'm finding that students, who were normally very quiet and introverted, have suddenly come to life. These games and activities have opened up opportunities for students to express themselves and has also allowed unlikely friendships to blossom. Students who weren't getting along in the playground previously have now learned to socialize with their peers in more appropriate ways. It's been an amazing transformation to observe. All thanks to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Moreno

  • The Little Library That Could

    Funded Dec 9, 2015

It is with a happy heart that I reach out to you all to once again thank you for the tremendous impact that you have made on our classroom. Our students were overjoyed to receive such a generous gift. The little library that could is up and running and students enjoy spending all of their reading time there. I have noticed such a change in their interest in literacy. For starters, they love to cuddle up into the bean bags or spread themselves out on the carpet with a good book. My non-readers have particularly taken an interest in reading, something that they struggled with prior. Moreover, my readers have teamed up with my non-readers (totally on their own) to read aloud to them in our library space. The fact that this has happened so organically fills me with such joy.

The audio books have added to our curriculum as well. All of my students (readers and non-readers, alike) have expressed gratitude for the ability to read along to a grade-level book. My special education students no longer feel singled out for their inability to keep up with grade-level reading. I'm so happy to be able to share the joys of reading with my students. All thanks to your generous donations. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Moreno

My students live in a dense, poverty-stricken neighborhood riddled with gang activity. It is not the environment that lends itself to succeed in an academic setting. The 16 students who make up our classroom are atypical learners and many are currently unable to read. The majority of my students have been identified as having a Specific Learning Disability. They need all of the support that they can get.
