As with all school counselors, I am focused on my students’ social and emotional development as well as their academic success. However, working in an inner city neighborhood school, this focus is intensified. Our students love to come to school, but unfortunately, they bring a lot of anxiety and trauma from the outside environment with them. My students struggle with communicating how they are feeling, problem-solving with peers and coping with day to day stress. Having a strong counseling program is essential to addressing these identified needs. The current school district budget does not include any monetary funding to enrich and develop the counseling program. All purchases made to date have been solely supported by my personal funds. If granted, I will use requested materials for weekly classroom lessons, small group and individual sessions, behavior intervention planning and professional development with staff. Elementary school is a key time for children to develop social and emotional skills. Many of my students do not have opportunities to learn these outside of school. My goal is to give every student a strong foundation in these skills through direct teaching and interventions in the areas of social, communication, emotional regulation and coping skills. With this foundation, students will move on to middle and high school equipped with tools to combat adversity, and hopefully, solve problems without guns.
