I am a K-5 counselor at an elementary school in a highly impoverished area. Working in a impoverished area I am conscious to the issues that many of the students and their families face on an everyday basis. Research shows that children raised in poverty are more likely to experience stressors and developmental deficits due to a number of circumstances that can arise in families with lower socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, because of that children raised in poverty are predisposed to emotional dysfunctions which can hinder their ability to communicate feelings and emotions effectively. This inability can lead to lack of engagement, peer isolation, acting out, and a number of other undesirable behavior
