My film students are eager and excited about the history of film and the creation of movies. My class consists of 7th and 8th graders at an urban school in Santa Ana, California. Most students are English Language Learners and come from low income families. Exposure to the arts is limited while they are not in school. My students are creative, but at times are limited by their lack of resources. My students learn about all steps of film development: from story boarding during pre-production to directing and acting during the production phase to editing during post-production. Students become familiar with the language of film as well as techniques like lighting, sound, and special effects. Students then put their knowledge to practice. Many of my students have not had exposure to filming using a video camera. Most have never edited a video. This year my class will also include several special education students. Giving all students an outlet for their creativity is important.
