  • Shake, Rattle and Roll! Exploring Musical Rhythm & Math

    Funded Jan 30, 2016

I am so thrilled that you have chosen to support our rhythm instrument project. Since our school is so new, we have little in the way of instruments. The students really love playing what few that we have, but it is hard to share when we have so few.

I am so excited to have them learn about music and STEM concepts combined! They will learn concepts such pitch with relation to size of the instruments and rhythmic values of notes among other things.

Our students come from many different backgrounds, both culturally and financially, so these rhythm instruments will help level the musical "playing field."

Thank you again for your generous donation and I look forward to sharing with you about how much the students enjoyed receiving such a wonderful gift from you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garry-Durand

This classroom project was brought to life by EMP Museum + Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and one other donor.
My name is Mrs. Cathleen Garry- Durand, I am a Music Specialist position in a STEM Academy at the Rogers School in Lowell, MA. (we focus on Science, Tech., Engineering and Math.) It is a public school that has recently opened, and as such has very little in the way of musical instruments and other supplies. It is located in an urban city north of Boston. Over 80% of the kids receiving free lunch. The population is made up of students from many cultures who are excited about learning in an environment that challenges them creatively. In Music class, we will be singing, dancing, playing instruments, etc. Since there are many diverse learners in the school including many newcomers and students with special needs, I will need to adapt my instruction to help these students with lots of hands on activities including playing rhythm instruments. Music education can help disadvantaged students bridge the achievement gap!
