Multicultural Literature Classroom Library
Funded Aug 11, 2020It was important for me to add multicultural books to my classroom library as the United States continues to become more racially & ethnically diverse. I wanted to add books that mirror the makeup of my classroom in order to make all students feel welcome and supported. I have used the multicultural texts primarily to encourage an open dialogue about diversity through socratic seminars (a formal discussion, based on a text, in which students are asked open-ended questions). Other skills and lessons have included discussing the characters and plot, theme, and point of view.
Independent reading takes place daily in my classroom. Studies have shown that students need ample time to read books that are self-selected, appropriate to their reading level, and are of high interest. During independent reading time, I spend time conferencing with students one-on-one or in small groups. This is the time I take to talk with students about the book they are currently reading while also focusing on specific reading skills that students may need additional help with.
I have noticed a significant increase in the number of students who are checking out the new multicultural books. In particular, students of color are checking out books where they see themselves in the characters or on the covers. They have also been talking about these books to their peers which has also increased how many students are reading the books. I am so pleased and thankful for this!”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and 14 other donors.Wild Readers Need A Jungle Filled With Books!
Funded Sep 12, 2015I just wanted to take a minute and thank you again for donating books to our classroom. The students have already started reading and enjoying them!
I believe in giving students a choice in the books they read. This really helps motivate students to read! This teaching technique of giving students choices in their reading also helps students acquire the specific skills they need to be successful readers. You have helped make this learning possible!
Thank you for helping me reach my students!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Nash
