The students of B.H. Macon Elementary School were overjoyed to learn that their program would be receiving a set of 10 ukuleles from a very generous beneficiary. Stringed instruments play a huge role in their musical heritage, and ukuleles are a wonderful way to step into that beautiful world.
Our students are born into an environment where "doing without" is a normal part of their daily lives. COVID-19 left our students bereft of almost two years of hands-on music making. A project like this one enables us to jump-start our learning engine in a big way. The 2023-24 school year will see our scholars reach new heights, make new memories, and discover new paths in life as their fingers find their places on the frets.
Every student is smart, in their own great way. Sadly, not every student believes it. My job as their teacher is to help them find the ways that they are smart by introducing them to new experiences, new musical instruments, new genres, and new performance opportunities. This coming year will no doubt see these once-dreams become a reality for these precious children, thanks to YOU.”

In just four short weeks, over 70 students (15% of our total student body) have found a home in our chess clubs. They have found, through chess, that they possess the intellectual capital to achieve their goals. With all of my heart, I want to foster and nurture this newfound hope inside of them. Through the use of these materials, we we bring even more of our at-risk children into the fold of our club and show them that they are powerful young people. In learning the game play, they will come to understand order, planning, strategy, economy, merited promotion, effort, reward, intrinsic motivation, time and material management, and sportsmanship. Our players’ relationships to each other have already shown dramatic improvement during our first month of school. We also provide opportunities for students to become the teacher for their new-coming peers, as well as for all students to take ownership of their club by electing officers to guide the events and learning that the club pursues this year.
