  • Catch the Wave Through Third Grade

    Funded Aug 24, 2015

The students are truly enjoying the carpet in our classroom. It has allowed them to complete many projects in groups and engage with one another in a comfortable setting. The students join together as a group on the carpet daily to engage in read aloud and partner work. Recently we have been completing science engineering projects in which case the students use the carpet as their work space. Not only has this added some color to our classroom, but the students frequently ask if they may sit on the carpet to complete work or read.

When I put the carpet into the classroom the students were very excited. They were there the day the carpet arrived and had many questions about where it came from. I conducted a conversation with them about what it means to donate things and have other people fund items for you. They were very appreciative and in awe that someone would do such a great thing. For them this was much more than receiving a carpet and more about what it means to gain wonderful materials from others. It also taught them to respect the materials in our classroom.

The carpet will continue to impact my current students, but also those that will come into third grade for many years to come. It is something the other students in the school get excited about knowing they will have a special space to learn and read in. Next year I intend to do more group based work with the students. This will give them the opportunity to engage in more group projects and individual projects. All of these different projects will allow the students to work around the room, thus using the wonderful carpet as a comfy place to be.

Thank you very much for giving us color in our classroom as well as a great learning space!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Peters
