Many of my students are first generation Americans. Many of their parents can not write or read English. However, their parents try their best and want their students to succeed. It is not uncommon for my students to come from single family homes. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Exposure to literature may be on the low end at home and yet the students love story time in school. Perhaps because many of the parents can not read English they rely on TV programs or Ipads to teach their children the alphabet. While they have the best intentions, these programs are no substitute for real literature and exposure to texts.
