Flexible Seating for Our Musicians
Funded Jul 19, 2024I want to send a sincere THANK YOU to all of you for your generosity in helping me get this project funded. You all were so generous that my project got over-funded and I was able to get some seating options for my students as well- cushions, stools, and little seats- to keep them from having to sit on the floor all the time. We will use the piano more and more as the year goes on, but I think every class except for my kindergarteners have heard it at least once. Most of my classes have sung along with the piano, and I've used it several times to help clarify a point- like when I was teaching my first and second graders about pitch and trying to explain high and low. High and low are so clear on the piano! I have also had a few classes request to hear me play a song, which I was more than willing to do.
Many of my students did not even realize that we got a piano over the summer. I'm in a new classroom, and the piano is turned so that the students see the back of it. One student wondered aloud if it was my new desk. Several students have jumped in surprise to hear it for the first time. It's a big difference from the keyboard I used with them last year!
I'm alternating between teaching keyboards and ukuleles every year with my fourth and fifth graders. This year is a ukulele year, so only my students who take piano lessons will get to play our classroom piano. Next year, I'll be teaching keyboards again and I plan on letting students earn the privilege of playing it- whether through good behavior or great effort.”
With gratitude,
