The COVID pandemic closures have been very challenging for the performing arts. My students were preparing a staged performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” when our school closed last spring. Those seniors who graduated did so without the opportunity for a final performance. As our school and district have not reopened the physical classroom yet this year, it seems the same fate may befall this class of students. With no opportunity to perform on a physical stage, I want to give students the ability to perform virtually. Microphones will be used by students as we navigate the various ways that they can perform this year. Students will be writing their own scripts for a series called “Conversations from Quarantine” which they will record and release on our youtube channel. Drama students will also be working with our school’s English teachers to produce high quality audio performances of literary texts. These audio performances will enable other students to experience the full emotions of these texts as they explore them at their own pace. In as many ways as we can, students will use the microphones to practice the craft of acting and share their talents with their peers and families.
