  • Books Kids Actually Want to Read!

    Funded May 5, 2022

Donors Choose allowed me to have amazing literature for my students to read. These books spark thoughtful conversations and allow insights into different cultures. Good stories reveal the world to us!

My students love choosing from our classroom library and through book clubs and individual conferences, we use these stories to learn important skills they will use as readers throughout their lives.

I believe it is important to update your library so that you are constantly learning. Even as an educator, your education is truly never finished. This project allowed learning for everybody in the classroom (students, teachers, para-educators and even parent volunteers!), which I can't thank Donors Choose enough for!

I have and will continue to use the resources donated to me to expand my thinking, and introduce children to all the wonderful stories people around the world have to offer.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boynton

  • I Can Find Myself At the School Library!

    Funded May 6, 2021

This is to thank you for your donation, which made it possible for us to add approximately 30 books about and by Native Americans to our school library. The books are in constant circulation and in my own fourth grade classroom, students have learned about residential schools and how many Natives now enjoy sovereign nation status. The books provided a jumping-off point to learn about that and Treaty Day, which our district recognizes as an official holiday. We have many students from the Lummi Nation in our district and school and I love having current stories to share that represent some of their experiences.

These books allow us to take another step in our journey of inclusion and diversity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boynton

  • The People in This Book Look Like ME!!!

    Funded Aug 26, 2020

It was amazing to see the response to my project "The People in This Book Look Like ME!" Obviously, the events and turmoil in this country, epitomized by the killing of George Floyd and the ensuing protests touched a nerve with many of us in education. If we as educators are participating in systemic racism, then it is our responsibility to do better for our students and their families. This DonorsChoose project felt - to me - like a first step on a long journey.

I read aloud every day to my students. Listening allows students to access higher level vocabulary and concepts. Talking about what we have heard is a great way to engage students and elevate their voices.

The stories I chose act as mirrors and windows. I hope that these books serve to spark questions and conversations with my classes for years to come. Thank you for your donations!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boynton

  • We Live in the World! Let's Learn About It!

    Funded May 28, 2018

The amazing, beautiful books arrived all through September and are still coming! We also were able to add cushions and beanbag chairs to our classroom library (with extra money donated after the fact)! Can't wait to have a much-improved curriculum for our spring study of the seven continents. It is always such a treat to be able to put brand new books in the hands of children. These pictures represent work done with last years' classes. I can't wait to share these amazing books with my students. Thank you for your generous support of our children!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boynton

My children live in a small, rural town in the northwest corner of Washington State. Some of our children have not traveled the 40 miles north to Canada. Many of their families were born and raised here. As I teach about the world and the seven continents, I realize how much they need to see quality stories, photos and representations of children around the world. How are their lives similar to the lives of my students? How are they different? Phenomenal, vibrant non-fiction filled with photographs of other places and people - rich, engaging stories with culture and history - these are the hooks I use to interest my children in the world beyond our doorstep. Whether it's seeing how children around the world travel to school, eat and play or learning that school is not an option for every child, I love opening up the world to my students and listening to the resulting conversations and ideas flow.
