Safely Observe Sunspots!
Funded Nov 28, 2022Students were genuinely surprised they could see sunspots using the new solar equipment from the field next to the school. The timing was perfect, as it allowed students to directly observe the solar anatomy we were learning in class.
Interestingly, the sunspots we saw did not directly correlate with live images provided by NASA. After a brief email exchange with a NASA scientist, we learned how NASA data are corrected for apparent rotation. Our observations then matched NSA images once oriented to solar north.
Images collected during star parties will be included in lessons and PowerPoint slides for future classes to make the class more student centered. We plan to hold regular star parties, at least once a semester, so anyone taking the class can also enjoy and participate in stargazing. Thank you to all our generous donors for making this possible!”

Exploring the Night Sky
Funded Oct 22, 2022Students were so excited to see an automated telescope in action and have the opportunity to both set up and observe directly from the rooftop of our school. For many of them, this was their first time seeing or using a telescope. Most were surprised that you could see planets, including the rings of Saturn, despite all the light pollution in NYC.
The new Celestron 8SE telescope was used by our class to observe the moon, Jupiter, and Saturn for our first Star Party. Students collected planetary images with their phones through the telescope and incorporated them into their Solar System presentations for class.
Images collected during star parties will be included in lessons and PowerPoint slides for future classes to make the class more student centered. We plan to hold regular star parties, at least once a semester, so anyone taking the class can also enjoy and participate in stargazing.
