I am a new SEL community builder at an elementary school in Baltimore! My work with kids will involve teaching them coping skills and helping them to calm down when they need a moment to collect themselves. I'd like for them to have access to a variety of materials that will encourage mindfulness and allow them to reset. Teaching children to regulate their emotions is crucial for the development of emotional awareness and frustration tolerance. By donating to my project, you will be funding the creation of kinetic sand trays, sensory jars, and coloring and drawing activities. I'd like to have a variety of sensory jars in my own space, as well as some to give to teachers for use in their classroom. These items help students to collect their thoughts and feelings when they are frustrated, overwhelmed, angry, or in any heightened emotional state. Practicing this emotional regulation makes it easier for students to engage in productive conversations, take responsibility for their actions, and solve their own problems.
