  • Readers & Writers Ignited: Empowering Minds Through Reading and Writing!

    Funded Jul 15, 2024

My students walked in to see all their new materials on the first day of school and got so excited! We talked about what good readers and writers do and what tools they need to be successful. The notebooks and folders have helped create good organizational habits and have already shown them their growth since the first week of school because we can look back at our work.

As we learn to edit and revise our work we use our colored pencils, pens, and highlighters to look at all our ideas and make corrections to enhance our grammar skills and improve our writing skills. When responding to our reading we also use our colored pencils and our highlighters to underline and look back in our text to provide evidence and justification of our thinking.

The readers and writers in grade 3 this year are ready to take on the challenges of creating good habits as learners. Being well equipped with the right tools has contributed to a positive experience. We are are excited to sharpen all our pencils, justify our reading and thinking, share our learning, and being creative with our writing. Thank you for your generosity and we appreciate you investing in our learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Giannaros

  • Flexible Floor Seating

    Funded Oct 17, 2023

My students and I are so thankful for our new seating! When they need to move and want to sit in a quiet spot or just be away from their desks they get to use the cushions and chairs to get comfortable and move about the classroom. Being able to move allows the students to give their bodies what they need while helping them focus on their current assignments.

They also like to use our new seating as a reward and the student of the day can pick the seating option first, they always go for the blue seat with the back on it! Students can stretch out their legs, adjust the back of the seat and work while being on the floor! Of course the bright and colorful chairs and cushions fit neatly into our class environment.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Giannaros

  • Hands-On Scientists

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

My scientists and I have been hard at work using many of the materials that you helped provide! We have been collecting data, making observations, and recording our results as we have engaged in hands-on activities and recorded our learning in our science journals. In our folders we keep our learning from various concepts and we add to it as we adjust our thinking. Currently we are learning and exploring with our new magnets, and this has been our favorite tool you contributed to our class so far. Having the various kinds of magnets and different activities have made it so much easier to explore, and has led to great discussions with classmates. Like good scientists, we are collaboratively working and critically thinking about force, static electricity, magnets and other exciting topics!

Thank you for providing us with the tools and activities to deepen our learning.

Our class and many future scientists will benefit from your donations. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity!”

    With gratitude,

  • Storyworks

    Funded Aug 26, 2015

Thank you for your contribution to my classroom. Because of your generosity my students are able to read high interest fiction and non fiction texts. It isn't always easy to find texts that keep the students engaged, which is important when you are trying to foster a love of reading. Another great component to our reading class is listening to what good reading sounds like and exposing everyone to grade level material even though they may struggle reading it. The online portion of the magazine allows them to listen to the same stories and get familiar with a text so that they can then practice reading it independently. Having even my lowest of readers enjoy the magazine is great to see! This is what I love most about the magazine!

When my students first got the magazine they weren't all that excited, just something else I was going to make them read! After they looked inside and began to see the texts and what they were about I could tell they were far more interested. There were high interest prompts that students their age would debate and I think this was the part that they enjoyed the most. Everyone has an opinion!!

Because the students seemed to enjoy this part of the magazine the most they are now having appropriate conversation about what their opinions are with justification. They don't even realize how important this type of discourse is. They are practicing life skills such as disagreeing appropriately with someone, forming opinions based on evidence presented, speaking and listening skills, and all from an engaging prompt!

Thank you again for taking the time to donate to a wonderful group of students, they are both hard working and motivated. Your kindness is appreciated and we look forward to getting new magazines every month”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Giannaros

My students are fourth graders in an urban district that is considered high poverty. Our school is located in a neighborhood, which provides them with a strong sense of community. We have a large Cape Verdean population that adds an entirely different culture to our school. Our neighborhood kids and our staff learn a lot about culture and diversity from our students. I feel fortunate to be part of a school system as large and diverse as mine.
