Children learn to love the sound of language before even noticing printed words on a page. I am requesting a listening center, stories on CD, a listening language activity kit, and a drying rack for art projects inspired by all of the stories. My students love to listen to stories and extend their understanding through art. Having a listening center and extension materials will help stimulate their imagination and expand their understanding of the world around them. It will also help them develop language, listening skills, and prepare them to understand the written word. Reading to my students is great, but giving them an opportunity to interact with a story independently is empowering.
