I work in a Title I school in the inner city of Phoenix, AZ. Most of my students families have limited means and don't have access to technology at home. In addition, increased monitoring and accountability measures in education require that students be familiar with technology in order to be successful in taking state mandated tests. In order for my students to be prepared for their academic careers, they need to have access to working and updated technology. My school district provides a few different online programs to support student learning. We have a subscription for kindergarten to two wonderful programs called Reading Eggs and Math Seeds. These programs are very interactive and promote academic learning through various games. It is differentiated for students and they progress through at their differing rates and need to pass a quiz in order to advance to the next level. These are excellent supplemental programs that allow my aid and I to work with small groups of students while the remainder of the class is working independently with these learning programs. We have used this program for the last few years and have found that it not only engages students, it also promotes and supports significant growth in student learning. Unfortunately, we have old and outdated netbooks that are slow and difficult for kindergarteners to use independently. We do have a set of 6 tablets but they have to be shared among three classes. This is not enough working technology to support the needs of a class of 30 kindergarteners. I want us to have a set that we can keep in the classroom all day to support our learning.
