Having these math supplies will allow for better teaching and learning in my classroom daily. For example, we use whiteboards regularly in class for math practice. The new whiteboards will provide my students with the needed templates to follow along as we practice filling in number bonds and completing fact families. With the whiteboards ready to go, we can review more concepts at a time and decrease the amount of time allotted for distributing materials. Additionally, the math manipulatives will be helpful visuals for my students as they grapple with new math concepts such as place value and composite shapes. They will have an easier time understanding these abstract concepts when they have tangible representations that they can see, touch, and manipulate (especially for my kinesthetic and tactile learners). It will also make learning more exciting--my students' faces always brighten when they see such colorful material that they can work with! Lastly, the math center activities I selected are specifically for improving math fluency. Math fluency in addition and subtraction are important for first grade. I will use these activities to give my students independent practice in math fluency as I hold small groups. As they play these fun activities, they will also build their ability to add and subtract fluently.
