Flexible seating allows students to make smart choices regarding their working environment. Flexible seating increases student motivation and engagement. By having many different seating options throughout the classroom, students are able to choose the spot that works best for them. Flexible seating made a huge difference in my classroom this past year. Having decided to dive in halfway through the year last year, I saw a huge difference in student engagement and behaviors. Students are able to try out all seating options and choose a space where they can be successful. Last year I made flexible seating work with materials that I had already personally owned. This year I would like to add to that and give my students more options. I have included items such as balance balls which allow students to be able to use small movements to stay engaged and on task. The learning stools also allow students to wobble a bit while they are working which allow students to release energy while working at the same time. Using the crates and buckets, I will also create some additional comfortable seating options at different heights. Students will be given an opportunity to try out each type of seating at the beginning of the year so that they can make an educated decision about where they can be the most successful. They are able to choose where they would like to sit daily and can even change their seat throughout the day. We will practice this at the beginning of the school year so that they understand the rules and expectations of flexible seating. This is part of helping a student learn to be accountable for their learning and making good choices.
