My students come from a variety of backgrounds and countries. Many of them are part of the working poor, as their parents struggle to put food on the table, let alone buy books or take them on adventures. My school is also very poor. It has made bare bones cuts and there are very few books, leaving us to teach to black and white copies made from the copy machine. Students rarely hold a book but instead get daily worksheets. Students read excerpts rather than stories to study for state tests. Children aren't learning to love reading, but rather hate it.
