  • Building a Library

    Funded Nov 30, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donations. Students are able to pick and choose the books they want to read. It's amazing to see their excitement. I have incorporated silent sustained reading into the class period, and students seem so much more invested now that they have book choices that are relatable and at their level. I am seeing so much confidence building through this new library. Students talk to each other about the books they are reading, and are always eager to start a new one. My favorite part is when students tell me about the first chapter book they have finished completely on their own. They feel so accomplished and proud of themselves and want to share that with everyone. Your gift has made this possible, and students genuinely feel the love and support that all of you have offered.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sanchez

  • Finding a Voice through a New Language

    Funded May 4, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for your generous contributions. Thanks to your gift, my students at all levels of English were able to engage meaningfully with a book. For some this was a first. At the end of Persepolis, students were already asking to read the next book. I have never seen my students so excited in class. So many of them have a newfound confidence and are not afraid to speak up in class and outside.

Many students were able to relate to the themes of Persepolis and Maus. Students were so surprised by how easily they could connect to the stories written by individuals from such different backgrounds. This was a true testament of how important it is for students to be exposed to all types of literature. Students learned more about the world and were able to reflect on their own personal lives and stories because this.

This newfound confidence and understanding of the world has been very present in class even with our new texts . Students are applying the skills they learned through Persepolis Maus to their other classes. It's amazing to see how much students have benefited and excelled from their new love of reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sanchez

  • The House on Mango Street (25 Books Needed)

    Funded Oct 21, 2015

Thank you so much for your contribution to my classroom. My students were able to explore the topics of identity and personal narratives through the reading of "The House on Mango Street." This was such a great tool and resource for my students who are still learning the importance of sharing their own stories.

All of my students have very unique stories, and were able to connect with those told by the main character, Esperanza. For the majority of my students, this was the first time they felt comfortable reading a novel on their own. It provided them with the confidence to read on their own and keep exploring the text. Thanks to your contribution my students will hopefully be able to use that confidence to keep advancing their learning and loving of reading and writing.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sanchez

My classes are all comprised of English Language Learners (ELLs). The majority of my students are from Central America and speak Spanish as their primary language. Teaching English as a second language is a fairly new concept to the area, and many schools are still learning how to cope with the rapid influx of ELLs. As a new teacher I am also learning how to bridge the gaps between the cultures that my students participate in and those that they are still being introduced to. Although ELLs are becoming a big part of the school population, there is still a stigma attached, one that comes with many stereotypes about my students. My students have very big dreams and goals that are filled with plans of higher education and professional careers. Their dreams are not self-centered, but rather, focus on the success of themselves alongside their families. Their success is also their families' success.
