My students are innocent and enthusiastic, from hardworking low-income families that struggle to give them a better life and a brighter future. They graciously accept whatever we as a school can give them, even when our best pales in comparison to what is commonplace in more affluent schools. In short, they don't miss what they've never had. Sadly, we teachers and staff know that our students are being "short-changed" and so we work tirelessly to ameliorate inequities wherever and however we can. My Kindergarteners walk with heads held high and believe in themselves as little "kings" and "queens" because we encourage them to do so. They could never imagine that they are living with "less," although over 95% of our nearly 800 students come from families meeting federal poverty guidelines. I'd like to do more to bring their learning resource access into greater alignment with what they so innocently believe.
