Education is constantly evolving in new and innovative ways, and there are always new discoveries! One thing we have learned is that students who approach learning with a mindset to grow will find more long term success than those who do not. This means that students need to be given opportunities to take on challenges and make choices in their education, and that includes choices about where they sit and work. Flexible seating is a wonderful way to let students work comfortably and productively in a way that suits them best. Just like adults, students don't want to be stuck sitting in an uncomfortable chair at a desk all day. I would like to provide my students with choices as to where and how they sit to best meet their needs. Research has shown that flexible seating in classrooms boosts engagement and productivity, especially for special education students and students diagnosed ADD/ADHD who are high energy and have a harder time focusing. The twister boards and balance balls will allow students to stand or sit and wiggle while working at our standing tables or their own desks. The yoga mats and cushions are perfect for those who like to sprawl out while reading a book, and the lap desks and support pillows will give students the flexibility to work wherever they'd like throughout the room. Last year I began experimenting with flexible seating in my classroom, and this year I would like to expand to include more seating options. As a teacher in an inclusion classroom my greatest hope is that by giving my students the freedom to work in a comfortable environment, and make choices for themselves, they will find success in their learning!
