Very few things engage students' imaginations and engage them in learning more than thinking about and exploring flight. Additionally, when students have the opportunity to fly something they created, it adds ownership and instills confidence that can be leveraged into other learning opportunities and experiences. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the basic principles of flight using paper airplanes, but not just any paper airplanes, ones that are powered and controlled with PoweredUp micromotors. Students will also learn about the historical significance of the advent of powered flight. These micromotors are interchangeable from plane to plane so that they can see how different shapes, designs, weights, and materials affect flight characteristics. This activity sets them up for success and frontloads the conceptual framework for flying bigger aircraft like RC Gliders that are also powered (we have remote controllers, batteries, and other safety equipment in class already) so that they more closely resemble a scaled-up version of the paper airplanes they made themselves.
