My students are wonderful kids who unfortunately come from very challenging backgrounds. Often times my students come to my class with adult-like mindsets due to their living circumstances. Although I teach in a Title 1 setting, we are not the only elementary school that serves an underrepresented population. It just appears that our students have it the worst. Each year I am surprised when I find out that my fourth grade students have the highest reading capabilities throughout their entire household. As their teacher, I know that there is only so much that I can do, but to my students it can make a big difference in their world. My goal is to use literacy to impress the idea upon my students that they are destined for greatness beyond their physical address and sometimes a great book and an imagination are the vehicles to help them get to the next destination.
