All kids need choice. Students feel empowered by having control over their learning environment to some degree. It helps kids build that sense of community because students are seated in informal seating and collaboration flows wonderfully among students and their peers if they feel comfortable. Flexible or alternative seating helps students with that sensory input. So many students need that sensory input and often times these needs are overlooked.
Students learn better when they are comfortable. Alternative seating allows kids to move their locations along with positions and feel comfortable. Comfortable students are calm, focused, and productive students. Giving my students seating choices will help them learn.
