The Kemp Sensory room is amazing! It does not have a schedule but is utilized all day by many students needing a break for sensory, emotional and lethargy reasons. The students love all of the activities that are in place for them to choose from. Some simply go in and relax in the black-out tent or lay on a beanbag or the fuzzy rugs to look at the bubbling fish tube and octopus tank. These activities help them to clear their heads for a few minutes. Others climb the rope ladder to use their muscles and energy. This is also a relaxation technique and a replacement skill for those students who are tense and want to hit or scream. Two different swings provide motion-either calm or fast-to regulate feelings of anxiety and stress. The sensory walls and water tables provide students with opportunities to use fidgeting hands in an acceptable manner while receiving tactile and visual stimulation. The sensory room will continue to be a safe place where all students can go to help with sensory and emotional needs. I hope to add crash pads, a jungle gym and a bubble wall in the future to provide even more options for our students”

Kemp's Sensory Room is underway and so far has received nothing but praise. Thanks to your generous donation, students now have a safe space to use when they have trouble regulating themselves, feel sluggish, lethargic or down and when they have too much energy & feel the need to calm themselves. There are three swings, light features, two pressure boats, a black out tent, sensory tiles, a tunnel, scooter boards and an entire wall of fine motor gadgets. There are four sensory tables filled with various items for students to explore, soft, plush rugs & beanbags to get comfortable on and a box of fidgets to give busy hands something to do. We still have more to add to complete the room but it never would have gotten this far without you.”

My students are each amazing individuals with unique personalities just like kids in general education. They are all severely intellectually disabled with additional physical handicaps. They are all non-verbal and in wheelchairs. They each have other physical and health impairments, too. They take pride in learning new skills and love making and having friends. They are truly the "rock stars" of our school. We encourage the general population to visit our room to socialize and work with our special population. I have a waiting list of kids who want to be morning and afternoon peer helpers. General education students who aren't on the helper schedule still find a way to visit my students in the halls, at recess, in PE or music and at lunch. My students are nonverbal and in wheelchairs yet they find ways to communicate with their friends. They smile, they reach for their friends' hands, they play simple games, they listen to stories, and they watch their friends perform silly acts for them.
