Help My High Schoolers Dissect Pigs!

Funded Jul 6, 2015

We are extremely appreciative of your donation! Though our dissections will not happen until the Spring during the Anatomy and Physiology Unit, the students are beyond excited to explore the organs of the body. Last year, we w had enough funding to dissect rats and the students still describe the experience as their absolute favorite from the year. Fetal pigs are certainly an improvement because the pigs themselves are larger than the rats, making it slightly easier to label organs. In addition, the fetal pigs are byproducts of the pork industry, so they are not actually being killed for the sole purpose of dissection. This helps with the hesitations some of the students have in regards to dissections.

When the shipment came in, the students were beyond thrilled that they too would have the opportunity to dissect. Some students could not believe that the pigs were packaged in a regular cardboard box. At the moment, the boxes are stacked in the back of the room and serve as a good reminder of what they can look forward to in the upcoming year. When the students get to dissect in the Spring, they will get to see firsthand the intricacies of the body systems of living organisms. We are so extremely grateful that you have donated this equipment to our school. Thank you for recognizing the importance of science education!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ferguson
