My students are reading "Left to Tell" by Immaculee Ilibagiza over the summer. It chronicles the life of a young woman caught in the midst of the Rwandan Holocaust, and how she was destined to be free from the terrors that were taking place in her homeland. When the students return in the fall, we will take a look at another holocaust that took place during World War II, focusing on the personal experiences and passionate memoirs of a holocaust survivor. Through our reading and learning, I am hoping to create a sense of awareness and compassion within our students that will allow them to become future caring and informed leaders. We will look at the beginnings of the holocausts, how they developed, and how they ended. We will also take a look at how these atrocities affected their individual countries and our world as a whole. Our theme for the upcoming year is "Coming of Age". These women were experiencing life-threatening situations while they were coming of age. As my students are beginning to come of age in the 9th grade, we will explore literature and text that demonstrates the coming of age process, and how it is sometimes forced upon you with the situations that you are given in life.
