  • Community Garden Oasis

    Funded Feb 8, 2023

Thank you so much for funding our project to help students learn about the correlation between gardening, community, and wellness of mind, body, and soul. We are looking forward to working with members of our community and school to move forward with our garden and sustaining it for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • Reading for STEAM

    Funded Oct 20, 2021

We are so sorry for the delay. Our teacher Mrs. Gann has had some illness in her family. They are much better now. Before that we received our books and circuit boards.

It was so much fun learning how electricity worked and reading different books about it. We even had a contest to see who could build the best circuit path in the shortest amount of time! We also got to learn how airplanes were invented and fly. We built our own paper airplanes and had a contest to see who could fly theirs the farthest.

Reading is a must in our classroom. We read during our ELA time to work on comprehension, vocabulary and phonics. We read during science to find out how things work, grow and live. Social studies is a time to learn about history and the things that make our country great. If we finish our work early, we have to read 3 books BEFORE we get free time. We even have to read and do story problems in math!

Thank you for supporting our classroom.

    Mrs. Gann's Class”

  • Did You Say Remote Learning!?

    Funded Mar 23, 2021

Thank you so much for helping us get the supplies we needed to do virtual learning. The manipulatives and flash cards are just what we needed to work on our math facts and sight words. We love using the dice to play our Roll It games. We roll a die and write the word from the clue box that has that number. We try to fill all our boxes. We get a point for each correct answer and another point if we are the first one to fill all the boxes. The points are used to buy virtual stickers and backgrounds to use for our TEAMS meetings.

The large Post-it charts makes it easier for our teacher to show us example of how to play our games, work our math problems and show us how to write our assignments. Our teacher has a hard time writing with the computer curser and it is really messy. The charts are nice and neat. She can save them for review too.

We have one other project that needs to be funded to get the rest of the iPads. We need so all of us can work on them at the same time. Please consider giving to it as well.

Thank you again for your support. Volunteers, DonorsChoose and Mrs. G are as she says - "Cooking with Gas!"”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • School Supplies

    Funded Oct 29, 2020

Thank you so much for helping us get the supplies we needed to do virtual learning. The manipulatives and flash cards are just what we needed to work on our math facts and sight words. We love using the dice to play our Roll It game. We roll 3 dice and put one of the numbers in each of the placeholder boxes - hundreds, tens, and ones. Our teacher draws a card to tell us if we add, subtract, multiply or divide. We get a point for each correct answer and another point if we are first. The points are used to buy virtual stickers and backgrounds to use for our TEAMS meetings.

The large Post-it charts makes it easier for our teacher to show us example of how to play our games. It is also nice to see what sentences our classmates have used for their spelling words. Picture Prompt Stories are so much more fun to do now that our teacher can show our picture on the screen and we can see the sentences as she writes them on the Post-its instead of bouncing back and forth from screen to screen.

We have one other project that needs to be funded to get the rest of our iPads. Please consider giving to it as well.

Thank you again for your support. You, DonorsChoose and Mrs. Gann are the BOMB!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • Virtual Learning Technology

    Funded Oct 23, 2020

My students have really enjoyed their new iPads! They are able to access not only our Schoology platform for announcements, but our online curriculum, Boom cards and Google classroom with a touch of an app. They have gained a new found independence and self-reliance for their own education.

With a computer, students had to login, connect to internet, login to the Schoology platform, click on one of their 6 courses... I think you get the picture. By installing the apps on the iPad, each task and class has its own icon to click. They see the icon that matches the picture on their visual schedules. This allows them to complete tasks without having to wait on someone to assist them in reading the class list, announcements and such. The audio accessibility feature is a blessing.

The iPads are easier for them to handle and carry. They are compact and considerably lighter than a traditional computer. They will easily sit on their desk without having to remove pencil boxes and water bottles. Hopefully with our next project we can get cases for them to protected against excessive wear and tear.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • OSMO, Coding and SPED? Yes, WAY!

    Funded Jan 9, 2018

It has been a blessing having the OSMO Coding Systems in our school. Many of the schools in our district are being trained to use the latest STEAM, the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, techniques. Our school is one of chosen to participate in the first round of training. Being an urban, inter-city school many of our students do not have access to computers, Internet or any other technology outside of our building.

It was exciting to see our kids exploring the programs and actually creating something of their own. This is something they rarely get to do due to environmental circumstances. They were so engaged in attempting to outdo each other in aspects of creativity, speed and competitive strategies. Another amazing outcome was the fact that our general education students were great mentors to our special needs population. They continually asked them questions to assist them in maneuvering the pieces.

All of our students were hesitant to rotate stations because they were so engrossed in the activity at hand they did not want to move on the try another area. Once they did change the process repeats itself each time the buzzer goes off. Our students with disabilities have seemed to enjoy the OSMO programs even more than our general population. This seemed a bit odd to me because many of the programs have intricate steps to follow. However, they did their programing more by trial and error and it seems to work for them.

Thank you all so much for helping us with Part 2 of our process. Now, on to Part 3 - getting enough iPads so all of our programs can be used at the same time!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • We Want to Do STEAM TOO!

    Funded Oct 25, 2017

Thank you do much for helping to fund my project! My students were hesitant at first to use the new technology. Although they were familiar with the iPad, the OSMO equipment was something new. However, it didn't take long for most of them to master placing the items in the camera field and progress through multiple levels during their 15 minute one on one time with myself or a paraprofessional. They, and my team, enjoy the progress monitoring feature that shows the ratio of problems correct to those attempted and tracks how many times a level was played before mastery. We post our scores and the student that made the most progress gets to have an extra pick from our treasure box. I have one student, with Autism, that especially delights in playing word games against the computer and squeals with joy when successfully dominates it. Several students have begun to use the problem solving skills they are learning with the tangram program to build new items from our blocks and LEGO's with just the instruction of build a "____" and no other directions. It has been a joy watching each one grow and learn through their new found ability to work independently with our wonderful technology and carry it over to other learning situations.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

All students love to learn in new and exciting ways, and incorporating technology into the lessons will help accomplish this goal! By having access to iPads and OSMO Learning system students receiving special education services in my room will be able to engage in online, interactive learning experiences to meet their IEP and STEAM goals. My students will also be able to participate in video modeling to enhance social skills. My students will be able to create and use visual schedules on the iPads, which will help with transitions and behavior management. For students who struggle with writing, an iPad can be a great tool for completing assignments. OSMO will help to introduce the world of coding to my students. It will also allow them to use critical thinking to solve problems and master phonics skills to improve reading and writing. My students will benefit from the use of the technology in our special education room to inspire creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration! Low Incidence students need a variety of items and technology in our special education classroom to have access to educational programs that will not only support their Science, Math, Reading, Writing skills but also help them with social and life skills.
