My school is a choice school where students apply and are chosen by a blind draw or "lottery system." Many parents in the city strongly desire their students to come to our school. This is in part due to the rich history of brain-based teaching we practice. My students come to school from all neighborhoods. They arrive each day eager to learn and excited about the many project based learning experiences we tackle. In reading we focus on authentic literature and incorporate the five components of a good reading instruction daily. Students learn about the world around them and tackle real world problems to try to solve. I am a looping teacher at my school. I get a group of second graders and they stay with me through third grade. This enables me to know the student well to be ready to teach at the individualized level the second year.
