Help Students Earn College Credit for Psychology!
Funded Oct 31, 2014Thank you so much for the donation of Barron's AP Psychology review books to my class. I work at a school where the majority of the students are low income and will be the first person in their family to attend college. The goal of our school is to ensure that all of our students enter and graduate from a four-year college or university. This is a high goal for many of our students, and so we want to do all we can to prepare our high school students for the college experience.
AP courses in general, and AP Psychology in particular, are a great way to prepare students for the challenging classes they will see in college. Students who take AP courses are more successful in college because they have been exposed to a rigorous, challenging work-load while in high school. In addition, passing an AP exam gives students the opportunity to earn college credits for their high school work.
My students worked very hard to prepare for the AP Psychology exam, and the Barron's review books were a huge help! Most of my students can't afford to buy these materials for themselves, and so it was great to be able to offer them these quality study tools. Many students checked-out and used the review books when preparing for the AP exam! I am so thankful for your donation, because I truly believe that these books helped ensure my students were ready to pass their AP test!”

Engaging Teenage Readers
Funded Nov 29, 2010Thank you for the donation of books to our classroom. I started an independent reading program in my classroom because studies have shown that it has many benefits for students. As students spend more time reading, their comprehension and fluency increases, their performance on tests like the SAT increases, and their vocabulary and writing skills improve.
The best way to ensure that students spend more time reading is to get them hooked on books they enjoy. This is why your donation of books is vital to my independent reading program. We are a new school and we do not have a school library where students can access high-interest books. It is hard to get students to go to the public libraries on their own time, so students need books they can easily access in the classroom. I currently have a small classroom library, but I struggle to find a book for EVERY student in my class. I have many students who do not enjoy reading, so it is essential that I have a large variety of books to choose from so I can engage even my most reluctant readers.
Your donation makes my students more excited about reading. They love seeing a box of new books that are just for them, and this interests even my reluctant readers, who want to explore and see what new books have arrived in the classroom. As the classroom library expands, I have more and more students who are excited about reading time and who are taking their books home and reading more outside of school as well. This is really my ultimate goal: that students become avid readers so that even once they leave my classroom at the end of the year they continue to read and improve their skills. Your donation is helping to make this vision a reality.”

Funded Feb 10, 2010Thank you for your donation of "Not on Our Watch." This text was a great way to introduce the students' social justice research projects. The students were able to learn about an important world issue most had never heard of, and it was especially interesting to them that this is something happening NOW!
Not only was this text engaging, it was a great way for students to build the skills they need to read and understand informational texts. In my classroom we often read novels, but outside of school my students are expected to do quite a bit of informational reading. These texts allowed me to work on these skills with my students so they are prepared to read and comprehend any text they may encounter in the future. Thanks again for your support of my classroom and my students!”
