I teach a diverse group of students. My school is a Title 1 campus with large populations of English Language Learners. My students are excited to learn about science and technology and they love to build. Unfortunately, many of them come from backgrounds and circumstances that have limited their exposure to foundational experiences with STEM concepts. As I have begun this STEM lab adventure, it had become apparent that, while the students have good general science and mathematics knowledge, many have little understanding of the technology and engineering aspects of STEM. The students are familiar with using computers, but have no understanding of how they work. Similarly, they have played with building toys like Legos, but have little idea of how to build a simple machine and to what work it could be applied. This is what I am hoping to change for my students.
