  • STEMming It Up with iPads!

    Funded Sep 22, 2020

Thank you so much for the donation of an iPad! This gift has provided our students with real world connections to current research that will support all our ongoing investigations in our classroom. Curiosity and access to technology is the key to our success as productive Americans.

Our 7th grade science students have already used this iPad to research information on the their science inquiry projects. They began researching various topics to investigate and needed research to support their hypotheses. Having research available at our fingertips is vital in completing this ongoing activity, as they assumed the role as a biologists and environmental scientists. They had so much fun being back in the classroom and starting this activity. They were able to access current information by using this iPad which in turn connects our research to real world events.

Having this iPad not only allows us to access the most current information we need to support our projects but it also supports their scientific literacy which aligns with the new Common Core State Standards.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kurz-Porretto

This gift has provided our students with real world connections to current research that will support all our ongoing investigations in our classroom. Curiosity and access to technology is the key to our success as productive Americans.

The students have already used the laptop to research information on the interdependence of animals and plants in the environment. They began dissecting owl pellets to further study the predator-prey relationships in an ecosystem. Having research available at our fingertips was vital in completing the lab investigation. Students were also able to look up the skeletal structures of various prey to do a comparative anatomy study of an owl's diet.

Having this updated laptop allows us to access the most current information we need to support our projects and investigations. It also supports scientific literacy which aligns with the new Common Core State Standards.

Thank you so much for your generous donation. We can't express enough how much this means to our classroom. This laptop will be used by many science students this year and in years to come. • Promoting Sustainability With Wind Turbines!

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

On behalf of myself and my students, we want to thank you for the generous gift of these very fun and cool wind turbines! We needed these wind turbine kits so we can create and explore alternative forms of renewable energy that further our understanding of how they help promote sustainability in our environment.

These turbines were a great start for teaching our students about wind energy and promoting a more sustainable environment. The students were immersed and engaged in this STEM project where they designed various turbine blades and measured the energy output they created with a multimeter and LED lamps.

By exploring alternative forms of renewable energy, our students saw firsthand how we can harness energy that is much cleaner and safer for our environment. This was such an exciting and great, hands-on investigation and STEM project that truly did benefit our students to further understand current environmental problems and got them thinking and having conversations on how to solve real world issues and problems that currently exist in our world.”

My goal is to teach my students more than just science. I want my students to leave my class with the ability to tackle assignments with the confidence and desire to think critically and work independently. I want them to be more technologically literate. My students attend a K-8, Title 1 school, with a diverse student body, with a great percentage of whom are considered economically disadvantaged. Our students have a strong desire to learn about our world and the ways that STEM ideas come to life. We currently face many environmental problems and our students today will be the decision makers of tomorrow. Therefore, it is critical that we provide hands on, relevant STEM activities that bring learning to life for these students.
