My students refuse to be held back by circumstance. They are constantly pushing themselves, each other and me to reach for excellence. While we are located in a high-need, inner city community where the literacy rate is dangerously below grade level, my group of eighth graders is comprised of the highest achievers of their graduating class. My students are looking forward to attending first rate high schools that will challenge them and prepare them for college and careers that they find fulfilling. They are motivated to do well academically, but we do not fixate only on grades in our class. My students are most excited by the opportunity to debate the issues, to piece apart the language of an argument and to put into words their own positions.
