Hi my name is Tomekia Bell and I served as an elementary school counselor at a title one school in North Carolina. Our student population is predominantly Hispanic and African American. Our total population consists roughly of 700 students. Each day we follow our motto that “We are respectful”, “We are responsible”, “We are ready”, and “We are bulldog learners”. However, to help students exhibit positive behavior we've implemented a system called Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). This approach helps with school-wide discipline and academic readiness and participation where behavior support strategies are implemented to support academic performance. The framework of PBIS is that it focuses on prevention, problem behaviors have clear consequences, and positive behaviors are acknowledged and rewarded. It is designed to meet the needs of all students. This is our fifth year using the PBIS model. However, funding for supplies and materials has become a challenge.
