My students currently have four legged stools to sit on at our tables. These are great, but I find my students constantly rocking back and forth on them. This causes the dangerous hazard of tipping over on the stool and it is also causing the legs of the stools to bend and not stand straight anymore. As I thought about how much my students rock back and forth on the stools, I came to realize the movement isn't just something they are doing randomly, but a need they present. When that need is fulfilled they are able to work at a much more efficient level.
An essential component of my students' academic success is the ability to move during lesson work. My students show me everyday their need to move while accidentally rocking on my current stools. Numerous research has been done on the link between movement, engagement, and academic success. I have read that research, however, just from observing my students I can tell you how much more engaged they are when they have the ability to wiggle. The difference is astonishing!
I am asking for a donation towards the purchase of eight wiggle seats for my classroom. Having these seats would allow the little bodies in my classroom to meet their sensory needs during seat work to allow for their full engagement in the lesson. My students would no longer have to worry about falling off their current stools if they "forget" not to rock on them. A fellow colleague has one wiggle chair we borrowed for a day to see the effects of the chair. To quote one of my students, "Mrs. S this chair is so cool! Look! I can move all around on it and still get my work done!".
