  • Math Around the Room!

    Funded Jul 23, 2021

First off, I cannot thank you all enough for your generous donations towards my Math Around the room project. These white boards are used almost every day by my 90 students. With this 360 degree view I can be centrally located in the room and see what everyone is working on. It is much faster than walking up and down rows. I can offer quick feedback which benefits the class as a whole.

The students were very excited when they entered my room in August. They had never seen a classroom set up like this before. It is definitely an eye catcher for sure. Students ask at the beginning of every class if they are using the whiteboards, they actually get pretty bummed out when I say not today. I honestly can't say in my 20 years of teaching, that I have had students asking for more problems before, it is a great feeling!

As the year progresses with the white boards I would like to expand on their usage. For example, having groups at a whiteboard, and each member with a different color marker. With a given problem presented, each student will have to offer something towards solving it. I will be able to clearly see who participates and what based on the colors.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shea

  • Project Based Learning Tools in 8th Grade Math

    Funded Aug 10, 2019

So far my students have been enjoying the large white boards and small bulletin board. They were very intrigued by the boards when they were rolled in, and couldn't wait to use them.

So far, the white boards have been used in one of our CSI investigations. Each team now had a large work space to solve all of their clues! I have also been able to use them during both 1 to 1 and small group instruction times.

The bulletin board is housing my current anchor charts, allowing my large board to be used as a word wall. By having a designated area in my classroom my students now have a set area to locate their resources.

In the future I am hoping to continue using the boards for more investigations, brainstorming, help and relay races!

Thank you Donors Choose and sponsors for allowing my students access to these wonderful resources!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shea

My students are a very energetic group to say the least. I teach three different levels of math on a daily level. Within these classes I teach regular education students, special education students, and students on 504s. In years past I have also taught ELL students, but do not currently have any this year. My school is the largest middle school in the state servicing close to 1300 students. We are a 6-8 school and run with a cluster model. Currently there are 5 clusters in grade 6, 8 and 4 clusters in the 7th grade. 12% of our school is Hispanic, 21% are ELL and 20% are special education students. 470 of our students are also low-income.
